  1. First queen of Henry VIII of England,
  2. 1509-33, and mother of Mary I; Henry divorced
  3. her without papal approval, thus beginning
  4. the English Reformation. Catherine had
  5. married Henry's elder brother Prince Arthur
  6. 1501 and on his death 1502 was betrothed to
  7. Henry, marrying him on his accession 1509. Of
  8. their six children, only Mary lived. Wanting
  9. a male heir, Henry sought an annulment 1526
  10. when Catherine was too old to bear children.
  11. When the pope demanded that the case be
  12. referred to him, Henry married Anne Boleyn,
  13. afterwards receiving the desired decree of
  14. nullity from Cranmer, the archbishop of
  15. Canterbury, in 1533. The Reformation in
  16. England followed, and Catherine went into
  17. retirement until her death.
